Finding the Perfect Location for your Photoshoot

These are things to keep in mind when thinking about the perfect place for your photography session - I'm here to help.

We don't need much space to photograph in, the most important features are a mix of light and shade and areas with an unobstructed backdrop.

It could mean a lot more to you though, think of your home and garden, or a place you like to walk, a pub you like to visit with a gorgeous garden or roaring fire.

You can easily have your photography session in your home and/or garden or in a local public park or public green space. If you know of a local pub/hotel or the owner of a local woodland, we can ask for permission to photograph there, but please bear in mind this may take time and permission may not be granted.

I have a few favourite places to photograph, and the list is ever growing. Please ask about and recommend places to me when planning your session.

Together, we WILL find the perfect place for your photography session!

How should we dress for a family lifestyle photoshoot?

I often get asked this question and my answer is not much different from how you usually dress but planning this as a family can take a little more thought.

You want to portray yourselves as yourselves, rather than dress up or style yourself in a way that is unusual to you or for the surroundings - i.e. you are unlikely to wear an evening dress or suit and tie to go on a woodland walk

I’ll advise you on the best colours for the season and location in your pre-session consultation. There are a few dos and don'ts when picking clothes:

Do:

  • Maintain your usual look and style

  • Think about colours that fit with where you'd like to display your photographs

  • Wear clothes that are suitable for the environment we will be shooting in

  • Wear clothes that are suitable for the weather

  • Co-ordinate your colour scheme (without it being identical) to the rest of your family, i.e. various pastel shades of various neutral clothes or all bright block colours

Avoid:

  • Wearing something brand new - it may make you feel uncomfortable

  • Putting children in clothes they need to keep clean and tidy - they won't so let's take that stress away.

  • Taking away anyone's personality in dressing for the photographs - we are capturing the essence of individuals as well as your family.

Don't:

  • Wear bold patterns and stripes

  • Wear reflective or fluorescent clothing (including reflective strips or bright detail such as logos or zips on clothing)

If you have any questions about what to wear, this can be covered in your pre-session consultation, and I'll advise on the best colours for the season and location then.
